Advocacy
WeTheChange leaders are committed to harnessing business as a force for good. We take collective action on critical and culture-changing issues through multiyear campaigns and timely initiatives.
2024: Strengthening Democracy
In June, as part of our monthly member meetings, WeTheChange launched a five-part series focused on how businesses can support democracy, created in collaboration with Sarah Bonk of Business for America.
Part 1: Current challenges and the role of business. See Sarah Bonk’s presentation on the importance of businesses upholding democratic principles and immediate steps businesses can take.
Part 2: Business: A force for democracy. Angelica Smith of Civic Alliance covered a variety of ways that businesses can bake support for democracy into their ongoing operations with nonpartisan programs and practices. See her presentation.
Part 3: Individual Impact on Democracy. Susan Morgan and Kate Linforth of Indivisible Marin discussed the importance of volunteer outreach to voters and how grassroots efforts can foster a more inclusive America. They shared actionable steps, including wearing conversation-starter T-shirts, phone banking, canvassing and texting and more. See their presentation.
Part 4: The art of navigating difficult conversations. Linday LaShell, our Advocacy Lead, founder of the growth catalyst Open Lines Co, discussed the art of navigating difficult conversations. She shared strategies for handling conflict before, during, and after it arises, emphasizing the importance of empathy, respect, and clear communication. See her presentation.
Part 5: Democracy Resilience – Navigating our Political Anxieties.
Members of B Local Wisconsin, Lisa Geason-Bauer shared resilience strategies for business and nonprofits, focusing on mental well-being, boundaries, and safe spaces.
Kimberly Flood discussed perception biases like the Dunning-Kruger and Lake Wobegon effects, emphasizing empathy, intellectual humility, and the roles of resilience and self-care.
August Ball shared an uplifting poem and introduced an Election Anxiety Response Plan to help prepare for election outcomes.
See their presentation.
Potential members attended this entire series free of charge—we aim to spread the word widely about the importance of this work and how businesses can effectively navigate politics and have a positive impact.

2023-24: Equal Pay, Pay Equity, Anti-oppressive Pay
Through our Equal Pay Campaign WeTheChange is working to move the needle on pay equity for women and others who face pay disparities.
When purpose-driven companies unite and make change, we become examples for others to follow. As a group, women earn less money than men, and women of color earn least of all. This is a direct result of the sexist, racist, patriarchal, capitalist system we are trying to change.
